Estimate based on DOE radiant barrier studies and average U.S. cooling loads. Actual savings vary by climate, home construction, and energy prices.

How the Savings Are Calculated

The estimate is based on Department of Energy studies showing radiant barriers reduce attic heat gain by 35 to 45 percent. Since your roof is the largest source of heat entering your home, lowering attic temperatures directly cuts the workload on your air conditioner. Our formula multiplies your annual electric spend by the portion typically attributed to cooling — anywhere from 35 to 45 percent depending on your system — then applies a reduction factor tied to your current insulation. Homes with little or no attic insulation see the largest benefit because there is less material already blocking heat transfer. Homes with fiberglass or blown-in insulation still save, just by a narrower margin, because the radiant barrier attacks the heat those materials cannot stop. The result is a realistic range based on peer-reviewed data, not marketing claims. Every dollar shown comes from verified physics: reflective foil facing an air gap reflects up to 97 percent of radiant heat, and less heat in the attic means cooler air entering your ductwork, shorter AC cycles, and a lower electric bill month after month.
